The Other: “Rest Energy” is a piece of video art done by Marina Abramovic. In this video a pair hold opposite ends of a bow, Marina is holding the base of the bow, while her partner is holding the string along with the arrow. They both slightly lean back so the bow has tension. Should either one of them let go of the bow Marina will be pierced. It is this balancing of the bow that gives the piece so much power.
I interpreted this piece as a representation of a certain kind of relationship. It is a relationship with clear and distinct roles, ones in which each part of the pair must fully comply, or else the relationship will end. There is a mutual trust that the balancing will continue, in order for the relationship to continue.
I chose to focus in on this special sort of relationship, the ones that require a balance. I gave myself as well as my roommate clear and distinct roles for the video, yet we move as one. I am the driver of the relationship, and he provides me with the fuel I need to continue. Should he stop feeding me, I would stop my motion, should he not accept my need for booze and cigarettes, I would stop. And if I stop, the relationship would no longer continue.
